Impact Investor: Why do we need impact economies, and what does it mean to build one?

The enabling conditions for solving environmental and social problems and developing positive impact projects remain uneven across the world.

Creating those enabling conditions requires identifying the optimal systems to build what, at GSG Impact, we call impact economies – systems where all participants put long-term economic, social, and environmental value at the heart of decision making.

When policies are designed to deliver positive impact, we get more than a few functioning impact investments, we get a functioning impact economy – where governments are accountable for measurable results, where investors can feel confident about investing for impact, and where consumers take into account the social and environmental footprint of their choices.

This crystalised for us in 2025, when a clear takeaway emerged from the annual meeting of our national partners, including through vocal advocates from Türkiye to Brazil, Ghana to Japan: if impact economies are the goal, there is no global benchmark for what good looks like.

Governments, investors, companies and individuals are navigating without a shared compass.
